So many things to like in this article, Starhawk. The theme of making a stand resonates strongly with me. When I was at Fairy Creek, where 1,200 people got arrested in Canada's biggest civil disobedience to try and stop corporations from destroying our last Old Growth forests, I brought up the subject of how we all deal with knowing that we are going to lose our battle with the military industrial complex, who have got way out ahead of citizens strategically in the last 50 years.

My friend said: "Oh, I know we aren't going to win. This is just where I've chosen to make my stand."

Ironically, as we spoke, I was wearing a T-Shirt that said: "I Stand with Standing Rock". Just the day before, an Indigenous activist had explained that she was going to get arrested at a certain crossroads, after being severely beaten by police a few days before, when they caught her alone. She said: "This is where I've chosen to make my stand". I stood up and asked her if I could "stand with her". She said yes, and we were amongst 60 people arrested that day.

Indigenous people here call trees "The Tall Standing Ones". As trees are my people, I found it quite beautiful that so many people chose to "Stand with The Tall Standing Ones", at Fairy Creek. Forests are so much more intelligent than humans. I feel so at home here, living in the forest. This is where I'm making my stand. peace and love

And let's not forget Keith Porter, Jr., father of two young girls in LA, also shot and killed on his front porch by an off duty ICE agent using his ICE weapon on New Year's Eve.
