You are, as usual, right on the button. In Aotearoa, which our current quasi-nazi government doesn't even want me to call our land because it's the Maori word for it, we voted out a kind, socially aware government under Jacinda Ardern with misogyny, racism and alt-right bullshit.

Now Luxon has recinded all Maori health reform, his taking the Maori language out of schools, stopping Maori foster kids from being placed with other Maori relatives. He has withdrawn funding for a health system that is barely functional, fast racking laws that repeal our environmental protection of our country so more oil and gas can be drilled for and on and on.

For God sake America, put your lives in the hands of a woman of color, who cares. It can't get much better than that. And if you get her...take care of her, so you don't loose her like we did ours.

so sorry to hear that--I always admired Jacinda Ardern and we always looked to New Zealand as an inspiring example. But the rise of the alt-right--or all-wrong!--is worldwide, and we need to learn how to counter it.

Thank you again Starhawk for most eloquently and passionately presenting the case as to why we need to vote for Harris and Waltz and do everything we can to get them elected. In a sane world there’s no way Donald Trump would even be on the ticket, but there are so many things that are not sane about where we are today. We continue to need to speak up and act for equity for those who are suffering, Palestinians yes, but also to bring balance. Russia cannot win and be allowed to continue to gobble up land for Putin’s pleasure and ego. That would open the door for all the monsters.

I remember you and I had somewhat of a similar discussion when Al Gore was running for president. At that time, I think a lot of people were hopeful that a third-party might make a difference.

It’s not only up to us, but we do need to take a stand and make a choice. Not the choice we wanted, but the choice we have to make.

Yes, there were times when I was hopeful that the Green Party might become a viable alternative--but that was back in the '80s! In forty years, they've never gotten more than a tiny percentage of votes nationally--although in a few places they've done well locally. But after this much time, it's probably necessary to say, "That hasn't worked so well. Let's do something different."

Starhawk, while your concerns about the dangers of a Trump presidency are valid, it's crucial to address the limitations of electoral politics in achieving true systemic change.

Electoral Distraction: Focusing on electoral politics often diverts energy from grassroots movements that aim to dismantle oppressive systems. The two-party system perpetuates the status quo, with both parties influenced by corporate interests and military agendas. This focus on elections can hinder the development of alternative, community-based solutions.

Systemic Issues: The problems we face—climate change, systemic racism, and economic inequality—are deeply rooted in capitalism and state power. These issues require radical restructuring beyond what electoral politics can offer. Building autonomous communities and networks of mutual aid can create sustainable change from the ground up.

Middle East Policies: Kamala Harris's stances on Israel, particularly her support for military aid, highlight the Democratic Party's alignment with imperialist policies. True solidarity with oppressed peoples requires challenging these policies and supporting self-determination movements directly.

Building Movements: Instead of channeling efforts into electing candidates who may not deliver substantial change, we should focus on strengthening movements that challenge power structures directly. This involves organizing around issues like housing justice, climate action, and racial equity without relying on state mechanisms.

Radical Change: History shows that significant progress often comes from direct action and civil disobedience rather than electoral victories. By prioritizing community resilience and empowerment, we can build a society that truly reflects our values of justice and equality.

Electoral politics can be part of a broader strategy, but it shouldn't overshadow the need for radical transformation through grassroots organizing and direct action.

Exactly, Ajay, and well said--but as someone who has been doing just that for the last fifty years, this is a moment when we DO need to focus on electoral politics to prevent the enormous harm that will come to so many vulnerable groups if we don't stop this fascist takeover.

Dear Starhawk and fellow commenters,

I hear the deep concern and urgency in your words about the upcoming election and its potential consequences. The gravity of issues like climate change, human rights, and global conflicts weighs heavily on all of us. I appreciate the call to engage thoughtfully with our democratic process.

At the same time, I'm reminded of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s words: "We must learn that passively to accept an unjust system is to cooperate with that system, and thereby to become a participant in its evil." This challenges us to look beyond the binary of Democrat vs. Republican and examine the systemic issues at play.

From a transformative justice perspective, we might ask: How can we address the root causes of the problems we face, rather than simply reacting to symptoms? How might we create spaces for dialogue that include all voices, especially those most marginalized and affected by current policies?

Cornel West has spoken about the "spiritual blackout" in American politics, emphasizing the need for moral awakening beyond party lines. This resonates with the comments about building a broader, more inclusive progressive movement.

In the spirit of nonviolent communication, I'd like to acknowledge the needs I hear expressed:

For safety and security (personal, national, global)

For meaningful representation and voice in governance

For justice and equity, especially for marginalized communities

For environmental stewardship and sustainable practices

For hope and a positive vision of the future

These are universal human needs that transcend party affiliations. Perhaps by focusing on these shared needs, we can find common ground and creative solutions that go beyond the limitations of our current political system.

Malcolm X's words ring true here: "I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it's for or against." This challenges us to critically examine all candidates and policies, regardless of party, and to hold our leaders accountable to higher standards of truth and justice.

As we approach this election, let's continue this dialogue with openness and respect for diverse perspectives. Let's also consider how we can engage in community-building and direct action that addresses our shared needs and concerns, regardless of electoral outcomes.

In solidarity and with hope for a more just and compassionate world

Thank you for speaking this truth. I, too, know too many people who seem to be oblivious to the real and present danger of NOT voting for Harris, even though she is not ideal candidate. t is a clear and present danger to Earth and the future and for me, that is my first priority right now.

Not voting for the Dems is actively or passively voting for the Repubs - and while the Dems are awful, the Repubs are cataclysmically terrible...how the horrors of the Middle East and Ukraine can be terminated, I dunno...tho the US prez, whoever they turn out to be, could bring a halt to both or make both worse: Dems may not do much good, but the Repubs will do much that is catastrophic. And it's all not just for us humans, but for all our relatives and the fate of the natural world.

Imagine if Al Gore had just a few more votes in a few key states, what a different world we could be living in today. The extreme left really is no different than the fascists. They think that they should get everything they want and fuck the other 7 billion people living on earth. Propaganda works. The evil geniuses have studied at length how to hook people with emotions and fill their heads with lies. If we don’t elect Harris we will be ruled by the genocidal thug Putin.

Just what about the Harris/Walz dance floats your boat? Because she was such a stellar vice presiden who had 3 years to attend to rising inflation and border crisis? Or his , Walz's, connection to China, or his fantasy service record? Really Starhawk, the majority of US are not behind Harris/Walz. Do your homework. Shut off the MSM, and all the radio stations that the FCC just allowed George Soros to purchase just a mere 40-something days before the election. I also don't love Kamala's connection to P. Diddy, or how she treated the black prisoners in California. And more about her that helped to ruin this beautiful state. I can't find one difference in these Dems that make me want to entrust their war-mongering policies to provide a better life for anyone except some of he migrants who are getting checks for food, clothing, homes, etc. even when 20K are bussed into a small town and neither the citizens or the migrants have been even introduced to one another to learn about their customs, needs, etc. to co-exist peacefully as the migrants assimilate. It's a shit shot, and it's on Kamala, the border VP who covered Biden's deterioration for years. Nope, not all of US are going the Kamala/Walz tickie Starhawk.

I see plenty to dislike about Donald Trump, and I see why deep-hearted people like Starhawk are disgusted and afraid of Trump's demeanor and language, which comes across as lack of compassion, for other humans and for the planet.

Yet when I see what the side the Democrats are puppets of, that global blob (the same global blob that Starhawk and Reclaiming were protesting in NYC in February of 2002 when I first met them), when I see what they have Already Done, across the world, and are doing now ...

That to me is much more dangerous ...

No need for rabbit holes or "theories", we already are here - https://www.businessinsider.com/larry-ellison-ai-surveillance-keep-citizens-on-their-best-behavior-2024-9#:~:text=Billionaire%20Larry%20Ellison%20says%20a,be%20on%20their%20best%20behavior'&text=Larry%20Ellison%20says%20AI%20will,system%20that%20can%20monitor%20citizens.

I'm on a bus to Washington, DC for this amazing event, that, sadly, will be profoundly misrepresented in the media. And good people will believe the misrepresentation. https://jointheresistance.org/

Spirals and spirals. The link from Business Insider about surveillance, everywhere, all the time, that is around the corner, is literally what RFK, Jr meant when he said a few years ago in DC that every tyrant in history has wanted the level of digital control that there is now. To make a point about the "turnkey totalitarian" precipice we are on, he used an example of how in Hitler's Germany, it was possible to hide. That was a statement about impending digital control, obviously not meant to minimize the Holocaust in any way.

And the media pounced on that. The entire eloquent apx 45? min speech, the multi hour event with wonderful, wise, diverse, speakers, was reduced to that one sentence.

They'll do that again, or they'll dismiss the event entirely.

Saturday is Rage Against the War Machine, that does include not paying for the bombs in Gaza in its demands.

RFK Jr hosts discussions attempting to grapple with the complexities in Israel /Palestine. That is not nearly enough. (And I don't mean I think it's complex to just stop dropping bombs, of course I wish they would do that, and I don't think RFK Jr is saying nearly enough about the humanitarian tragedies there.)

But for so many reasons, at this point, in this political reversal, the Blue Team is the side that literally conflates True speech with terrorism. They went after doctors for being honest and right all along.

So much more ... information that can be followed all the way down to its roots. I will attempt to share more of it on my not-yet-born Substack.

There was a hearing in Washington, DC on Monday, you probably know of it. If that was held by Democrats, and the people there weren't - some because there is nowhere else to go - aligned with the only side that is not ravenously censoring true information, especially about health - and even tho some of those speakers had been on the Blue Team, and all know that health / soil / poisoning of food and water, is beyond politics and should not be political), if that was aligned with the Blue Team, wouldn't everyone who cares about regenerative agriculture and health be ecstatic, moved to tears, that finally - finally - serious discussions about the root causes of illness and how we farm and eat and the health of the next generations, are reaching into government.

But, no .. because of TDS and the allergies to anything not on the approved narrative (which now is literally the cover of Time Magazine saying "What if Ultra-Processed Foods Aren't so Bad For You?", as soon as a certain health-focused alliance was announced ...

This is how the media covered that amazing event ~ https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2024/09/rfk-trump-health-maga/680011/

"The Woo-Woo Caucus Meets" (Imagine if Republicans owned the media and that was a derogatory headline about the Exact Same Hearing that was called by AOC or someone on the left.)

This is a more accurate version -

Meant with respect for all.

I truly believe that Rescue the Republic is the movement we need. It is not about Trump. Its the people around both sides. Harris / Walz are puppets of a psychopathic global blob. Compared to that, an obnoxious narcissist surrounded by some of the wisest people in the world is a far lesser evil.

Never thought I'd say that about The Bad Man.

But I've seen how much the media has lied. Lying about honest doctors was what got me to see that they are much worse than "bias". They are purposefully manipulative. And good people believe them ...

What are you doing here? You clearly don't stand for anything Starhawk does.

And you're wrong. Even if she loses the electoral college, Harris/Walz will win the popular vote.

Hi Mark ... I think it's more like the Democrats, in this current incarnation, the neocon, autonomy-violating incarnation of the Dems that are Plato's Cave versions of values that sound nice, but they always invert, those Dems don't stand for what they claim to stand for.

Starhawk has been an inspiration to me since I read The Spiral Dance decades ago, and met her at protests against the same neocon global military-industrial-complex blob that is now part of the Democratic Party. (This is not a conspiracy theory, those neocons just made a public endorsement of Harris.)

And Starhawk is still an inspiration to me. Because in all this madness of inversions, where it seems impossible to believe that anyone of good faith could believe the media*, after their trail of obvious lies, Starhawk is the one person with a following who I know of who still believes the basics of the official narrative, but who I trust, for sure-sure, is coming from a place of integrity.

Starhawk is about trying to respectfully communicate. She doesn't jump to hateful insults and instant cancellation (which is rare on the left these days, especially if the topic is politics / The Bad Man).

I can't speak for her or anyone besides myself, but it seems like Starhawk sees the value in diversity that includes diversity of thought, and wants to make space for difficult conversations.

(* - "Media" doesn't only mean media with budgets like the NYT, WaPo, MSNBC, etc. "Grassroots" media from the left, with a few exceptions who the narrative makes people allergic to, is all getting their information from the same sources. In 2020, I didn't trust what I thought was "corporate media", I trusted Democracy Now!, Indymedia, the grassroots far-left. But all that information comes from the same polluted headwaters of narrative control. It's 2024, this is not a conspiracy theory.

(& there are plenty of sources that dissent from the narrative that I don't trust or take at face value. But the sources who have been right on everything or almost everything for years are all calling out the media's lies right now, whether they lean left, right, neither.)

(Also, Starhawk has gone to disaster areas to help on the ground, and called out the lack of adequate FEMA response to Hurricane Katrina. If this were the Bush or Trump administrations, this response would be considered proof that the gov't cares nothing for the people and need to be voted out ~ https://www.dossier.today/p/the-entire-biden-harris-cabinet-is )
